About Jenny Egan

Jenny Egan's many-faceted career has won her wide recognition as an actress, director, playwright, scholar, and teacher. Winner of the coveted Clarence Derwent Award for her debut performance on Broadway as Mary Warren in The Crucible, she later replaced the ailing Anne Bancroft in Boston in the leading role of The Devils.  She has created roles in the American premieres of plays by Albee, Arrabal, and Ionesco, and was starred in the Berlin Festival production of Heaven and Earth by Gerlind Reinshagen. As actress, Assistant Director, and Makeup Consultant, she has been associated with the NY Shakespeare Festival (under a Ford Foundation grant), the Phoenix Theatre, and the Lincoln Center Repertory. Her film and television credits include featured parts alongside such stars as George C. Scott, Haley Mills, and Joanne Woodward. Eventually, she was honored by Grinnell College for her distinguished service to the arts.

A noted acting coach, Jenny Egan taught on the faculty of the Columbia Graduate School of the Arts, at NYU, where she earned a doctorate in the Humanities, and for the Berghof and Stella Adler Studios. She has directed or guest lectured at the Canadian Youth Theatre Conference, the National Park Service, Post College, and was Visiting Professor of Theatre and Master Teacher of Acting at SMU. A film she wrote and directed, In Freedom Born, was a finalist in the American Educational Film Festival, and her television adaptation The Miraculous Mummer, was aired on PBS.

She was founder and director of the Four Winds Theatre, Inc., an innovative non-profit company specializing in documentary dramas performed in the U.S., most notably at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum, and abroad at historic houses under ambassadorial sponsorship. She has designed extensively for Off-Broadway and university theatre, and was the recipient of a $25,000 grant to write and mount The Taking, a documentary on the Spanish Conquest.
